All About Everyday Manners

"If I'm not sure my new neighbors are a gay couple, may I ask?"

Two men recently moved in next door to me, and I'm figuring they're probably a couple. But I don't know that for sure. Is it okay to just come right out and ask them if they're gay?

No, that’s not a good idea. Feel free to invite them both over for a drink, barbecue, or weekend brunch, but don’t just come out and ask them about their sexual orientation. Once you’ve started to get to know one another, it’s fine to ask them some personal questions. And their answer to a query like “Where did you meet?” or “How long have you been together?” will usually do the trick. My guess is that they’ll come out to you then — unless they’re straight roommates.
